Why monitor employee health?

Employers are obligated under the Health & Safety in Employment Act 1992 to take all practicable steps to ensure the health and safety of employees in the workplace.

This legislation is supported by Occupation Safety & Health (OSH) codes of practice, essentially a guidebook to assist employers in meeting their statutory obligations. The OSH governing body stipulates that employers must provide a safe and healthy working environment. Inherently, this environment should have no acute or chronic impact on employees' health.

Failure to provide a safe and healthy working environment leading to adverse impact on the health of employees can result in heavy compensation claims, infractions from the OSH Department and significant increases in Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) Levies. Illness/injury absenteeism rates, productivity, workplace morale and employer-employee relations can all also suffer as a direct result of inadequate attention to OSH issues.

In view of these external and internal imperatives, early detection of occupational employee health problems is essential. The only sure method of identifying these cases is to monitor employee health, thus making pre-employment health testing (termed baseline assessments) and annual employee health monitoring ultimately mandatory.
