The Background

Western Bay at Work Tauranga Careers Expo has been a source of inspiration and advice for students and new career seekers, since 2009. The event, held over a Friday and Saturday during the second week in August, is attended by thousands of students and job seekers and well regarded by schools, tertiary institutions and local businesses. The event aims to fill the information gap through opening students’ eyes to future possibilities across a range of industry sectors at a local and national level.

The event has continued to grow each year and following feedback from some of our key stakeholders, it was decided it was time to refresh the brand, to establish its own identity and to ensure that we resonate and capture the attention of students who are about to embark on making one of the most important decisions in their lives.

Introducing ‘Canvas’ Tauranga Careers Showcase

The name Canvas brings to life the very purpose of the event – to encourage students to treat their future like a blank canvas, and explore the multitude of opportunities available.
By interacting with tertiary institutes and businesses, visitors are empowered to see that they CAN do anything. They can paint their canvas however, and with whatever, they wish. Even before it is painted, a canvas is a tapestry of threads weaved together, just like the students’ lives as they grow, learn, and discover what they want to be.

One of the key purposes of this rebrand was to give the event a fun, contemporary vibe – connecting with the excitement of a future full of possibilities, and being an event students would talk about. Canvas is easy to remember and fresh, while ‘careers showcase’ lets people know what they will find there. As part of the rebrand we have refocused canvas’ communication channels, to connect with students on their level. A large part of this is through digital mediums, including social media, and a new event app.

We are excited to launch canvas, and keep on making this event on the region’s calendar.
