It takes about four hours of stiff climbing to get to Mt Brown Hut. The main track to Mt Brown Hut starts at Geologist Creek near Lake Kaniere. From the carpark the track travels through the bush before crossing a small creek. Another 20 mins takes you to the bottom of a steep spur which the track climbs up, with some sections being very steep. The forest changes as you gain altitude until, finally, you break out into tussock. From here it is about 15 minutes to the hut.
Volunteers have also cleared a track from Mt Brown Hut down to the Styx river, making a loop trip possible although this track is longer and more adventurous. This marked route mostly follows a ridge and is very steep in places but passes through some lovely forest. The track joins the main Styx Valley track beside a stream and another 10 minutes takes you to the start of the 4WD track to the road. It is about 3 kms from the Styx track carpark to the Geologist Creek carpark.
Have a great trip!
