Love our Wetlands - Waiheke

A COMMUNITY CONSERVATION PROJECT

Rangihoua Wetland is an ecologically important wetland site, as are all wetlands around New Zealand and the world. Wetlands are the kidneys of our oceans, filtering water as it flows through and out to the ocean. Wetlands trap carbon, provide habitat for animals, birds and fish. Wetlands improve water quality & reduce flooding effects & in New Zealand only 10% of wetlands remain. Being an island community we are more connected to the ocean and waterways that surround us. So join us, bring your whanau, neighbours & friends as we restore the natural waterways of our beautiful Island!

So far the Waiheke Community and groups of volunteers have planted 6333 locally eco sourced Native trees around the waterways of the Rangihoua wetland, Te Motu Wetlands and Matiatia Headland. All ecologically important wetland sites and habitat and breeding ground to many native threatened bird & fish species including wetland Bird, the Banded Rail.
