Kerikeri School Of Music

The philosophy of the Kerikeri School of Music centers on a concept of music-making being a communal or group activity, as well as an individual experience. Making music is a very natural part of life and we believe all children potentially have the talent to make music. Although there is a focus on individual instrument and voice tuition and solo performances, stu¬dents are encouraged to perform in various ensembles. This, we believe, will give the students a real taste of what making music is about and will accelerate their musical development. We hold students’ and teachers’ concerts throughout the year with a final End of Year Concert at the Turner Centre in Kerikeri. Music as a “second language” stimulates brain functions, increases creativity, awareness, co-ordination and emotional sensitivity, so we encourage all children and adults to learn and enjoy music. All our students are taught to read music, and our lessons include the fundamentals of music theory.
The School of Music offers Individual lessons, Group lessons and Shared lessons, as well as jazz, rock and classical ensembles.
The School has also developed music education programmes for use in Primary Schools and Marae groups.
