Hokianga Art Gallery

The Hokianga Art Gallery is located in the beautiful, historic township of Rawene on the Hokianga Harbour. Hokianga has a rich bi-cultural history and this is reflected in the visual arts that come from there.
The Hokianga Art Gallery was established in 2009. The vision was, and is, to provide support for local artists by promoting them and showing their work in the white-walled gallery space. The Gallery is located at 2 Parnell St right in the centre of the Rawene township, overlooking the harbour. A notable historical building, the design of the gallery imitates that of a waka, its prow facing out towards the water. This is where the journey for many Hokianga artists begins.
There are now two art galleries operating in Hokianga, The Hokianga Art Gallery on the south side of the harbour and Village Arts on the north side in Kohukohu, another historic township. Artists are encouraged to show their work in these galleries – and hopefully sell it too!
This area prides itself on a diverse and culturally exciting range of art including painting, sculpture, whakairo (carving), raranga (weaving), jewellery, photography, ceramics and textile art – to name but a few. There are regular exhibitions and the openings, which begin with a mihi whakatau, are an important part of the Hokianga events calendar and involve the community and manuhiri (visitors) alike.
The gallery is run by a group of passionate volunteers, keen to see the arts thriving and flourishing in their community. The Hokianga art Gallery also enjoys a working relationship with the Applied Arts courses run by NorthTec. Students on the courses have a wonderful opportunity to exhibit their work at The Hokianga Art Gallery and gain valuable exhibition experience too.
