More about Greymouth Volunteer Fire Brigade

The Greymouth Volunteer Fire Brigade (GVFB) was formed on 27 April 1867 originally based in Boundary Street and comprised 34 Volunteer members. The move to the current location in High Street was undertaken in 1976 following the Inangahua Earthquake which destroyed the original Station. The GVFB is Station 61 in Region 4 of the New Zealand Fire Service and currently has an establishment of 25 Volunteer Members.

The Brigade is made up of men and women from our community. They come from all walks of life and from all parts of the Greymouth community including builders, mechanics, farmers, planners, engineers, business owners, bakers, paramedics and from the trades and retail sectors.

The GVFB respond 24/7 to a wide range of calls averaging between 170 and 250 call outs each year to all manner of emergencies ranging from motor vehicle accidents, car fires, PFA’s and structure and vegetation fires.

We have two Fire Appliances a Type 1 Fire Appliance known as Grey 611 and a Type 2 Rescue Tender known as Grey 617. We also have a Toyota Hilux Ute used for vegetation fires, as a troop carrier and as a general support vehicle.

Training plays an important role in our duties as Volunteer Firefighters therefore we train every 1st and 3rd Monday of the Month at 1700hrs.The 5th Monday of the month (when it occurs) is a designated Brigade Meeting night.
