More about City Cricket Club Inc - Whangarei

City Cricket Club Incorporated was established in 1946 and is a pillar club of Northland Cricket and also the founding club to the Cobham Cricket Club.

The club is located at one of the finest purpose built international cricket grounds in the country and also home of Northland Cricket – Cobham Oval, Port Road Whangarei.

Over its existence it has had thirteen Life Members all of whom have played integral and instrumental roles in creating the family culture that it has been 'famously' well known for throughout the cricket fraternity over the years.

One of the many towers of strengths behind City's success both on and off the field has always been its highly effective, professional, driven and passionate personalities who have been on the City Cricket Club executives and committees. 40 years of Northland Cricket executive has been led by a chairman from City Cricket Club.

City Cricket Club have a long history producing New Zealand, First Class and Northland Representative players – Bob Cunis, Robert Anderson, Geoff Howarth, Glenn Turner, Bryan Young, Bill Fowler, Craig Presland, Alex Tait, Tim Anderson and in recent times Joey Yovich.

City Cricket Club has prided itself in setting the bench mark in Northland when it comes to junior cricket in the area dating back to the 1970s.

During this time it has seen huge numbers with many City Cricket Club juniors going onto play for Whangarei and Northland at age group level and higher.

At least half of the sides which competed for Whangarei Boys' High School (WBHS) Xl at the National Gillette Cup finals in 1994, 1996 and 2009 have been City junior members, eight of the 2013 WBHS team were taught how to play their cricket at City Cricket Club.

In 1994 when WBHS won the National Secondary Schools Gillette Cup title, 6 of those members were City Cricket Club members.

In more recent times it has been fortunate to have the coaching and coordinating services and skills of Russell Smith, Richard Pooley and more recently City Cricket Club coach Karl Treiber.

City has also had a very proud tradition and succession of Professional players. These have been popular figures in supporting the coaching structures and programmes.
