More about Awapiri Pack track Tours

Back in the depression the Awapiri pack track was formed through the then "Braes of Sutherland" station. Linking the Awatere valley with country in the head of the Ure and Clarence via the Inland Kai koura range. Now the station, renamed Awapiri which means by the waters, uses the pack track to access the back country when mustering or just to get to the Swale hut.
So that everyone can enjoy our little piece of the high country, we have designed a guided, catered walk out to the Swale and back along the pack track. Experience a little bit of what it is like for us when we go out to muster the merino's off the high country. We will give you a manuka hill stick and show you how to use it during the first day where we will start by helping you roll your swag for the journey.
After an hour drive along the 4WD track we will direct you onto the pack track which will take you on an hours walk past the old Flynns hut and up to the new Flynns hut. This is where we spend our first night, dining on home grown produce and enjoying the scenery, wildlife and birds.
Day 2 will start with a hearty breakfast and loading our swags onto the pack horses who will carry all we need along with us as we complete the 3 to 5 hour journey to the Swale hut. You will tramp through high country and see the merino sheep in their natural surroundings. There will be wild goats, pigs and deer to see .
The final hour of the tramp passes down through native bush comprising of manuka, Totara and beech trees before a short climb out of the bush to the new Swale hut. Again you will enjoy hearty home grown food and from the deck views of Mt Tapuanuku and the Chalk range. Anyone still feeling fresh enough can take a walk down to the naturally and recently formed Lake Awapiri or other places of interest on the property. There is interesting rock formations and alpine plants galore. Otherwise relax and enjoy the abundant bird life and undisturbed peace and quiet.
Day 3, we load the pack horses again for the return journey up through the bush and into the saddle with vast views of the Awatere Valley. The pack horses are unloaded at Flynns and you are returned to the homestead via the 4WD track we drove in on.
