Built in the 1880's and operational as a school until 1939, it has a character and history of its own. Being central it is 30 minutes to the world famous glow worm caves of Waitomo, and 45 minutes from the hobbit movie set at Matamata. Cambridge and Pirongia 20 minutes away.
