Mountain Skills NZ

Our Introduction to Mountaineering Skills course is for people with limited or no experience of winter and spring mountaineering who would like to gain the skills to travel safely in the mountains.
Participants on this course should have a reasonable level of fitness and be capable of carrying an overnight backpack for up to four hours.

The skills you will learn:

Planning and preparation for a trip
Setting a tent in the snow
Walking on the snow
Use of ice axe and crampons
Self arresting
Route finding
NZQA unit standard 18132 “Demonstrate basic movement skills and the use of ice axe and crampons” for your record of learning

We run courses every weekend from mid July the end of October.

All technical gear required is supplied by us ( tents, ice axes, crampons, etc)
