_____JIU JITSU MAT ETIQUETTE_____
GENERAL CONDUCT
– Try not to be late for the class. Not only is it disrespectful to the teacher and other students, it also puts you in a stressed-out frame of mind which is not conducive to learning.
– Wear your shoes between the changing room at the mat. This is for your benefit and everyone else’s. DO NOT WALK BAREFOOT INTO THE TOILET.
– Before stepping on the mat please bow to your instructor, and bow before you step off. This is a sign of respect.
– Try not to shout loudly while you are in the dojo. You should try to conduct yourself. Treat others how you would like to be treated.
– Don’t talk while the instructor is demonstrating something. This is both rude and disrespectful.
– Do not brag about who you tapped out and how tough you are. Every dog has his day, and sooner or later you will be humbled, so start acting that way as soon as you can.
– Wash your gi at least once every 2nd training session. Nobody likes a smelly dude.
– Please shower regularly.
– Please make sure your finger and toenails are trimmed - they can slice like knives if left uncut.
SPARRING
– Traditionally, the unspoken rule is that you do not ask a higher grade to spar. However, if you are polite and respectful, most senior students won’t mind if you do.
– Try to view your sparring partners as people who are there to help you learn. If you go excessively hard with them, sooner or later they are going to go hard with you.
– The more you relax and let go of the outcome, the faster you will learn. The harder you try to squeeze and muscle your way through every situation, the slower your progress will be.
– Be CAREFUL when applying submissions. Many of the injuries that occur in bjj are caused by students who lack self-control and apply moves with too much brute force. Try not to be one of these guys – nobody likes them. Go SLOW on any joint lock, especially shoulders, arms and knees.
– Be aware of those sparring around you. All too often avoidable injuries happen when one pair of sparring students lands on top of another. If your area of the mat becomes crowded, move to another place. Lower grades always move out of the way of higher grades.
– Don’t put your hands or feet on your opponent’s face.
– When the instructor calls time, STOP. Do not carry on trying to achieve your position or finish your submission.
– No leg attacks for White belts except straight footlocks. Bluebelt no-gi can do kneebars but only for NO GI. Purple and up can to toe holds. General IBJJF legal submissions should be enforced but not outlawed. If you want to practice leg attacks please let your training partner know before the roll so there are no "surprise" heel hooks or anything like that.
