The first church raised on this site in Grey St, Hamilton East, was opened in 1912 and called the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary. The second church, bearing the same name, was built in 1975 but five years later it became the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the formation of the Diocese of Hamilton.
Essentially, though, the cathedral is a sacred place where memories are made. Generations of Hamilton families have worshipped at the earlier churches, they have married here, baptised their babies, farewelled their loved ones, nurtured old friendships, and formed new ones.
